Engaging Teachers in Remote and Hybrid Learning

In this session you will learn practical and effective strategies for teaching mathematics and mathematics teaching practices in both remote and hybrid settings in ways that increase engagement and reduce cognitive load. We will explore strategies for implementing problem-based learning, monitoring work in real time, and encouraging active participation. You will leave with some new ideas and resources you can use in your own settings.

This panel will focus on reimagining support for the learning of mathematics teachers through the lenses of lessons learned and challenges faced over the past year, as well as priorities for the future. Panelists will bring insights from facilitating conference breakout groups that considered perspectives such as teacher education for social justice, math content courses, professional development for practicing teachers, as well as elementary and secondary teacher education.

Mike Flynn

Director, Mathematics Leadership Programs

Mount Holyoke College

Mike Flynn is the director of Mathematics Leadership Programs at Mount Holyoke College. He runs the Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics program and leads professional learning for K-16 educators and administrators in both mathematics and remote teaching practices. Dr. Flynn was one of the first educators to use Zoom back in 2013 to design interactive online learning experiences and has been perfecting the format ever since. Presently, Dr. Flynn is supporting teachers and school districts around the world in creating engaging online learning experiences for students.
